Does a Dashcam Lower Your Car Insurance?
The short answer: sometimes directly, always indirectly. Here's what UK insurers actually say — and what really matters.
Direct Premium Discounts
Some UK insurers — including Adrian Flux, Coverbox and several broker-specific policies — offer explicit discounts of 10–15% for drivers who fit an approved dashcam. These schemes typically require the dashcam to meet minimum resolution standards (usually 1080p) and to have GPS logging.
Most mainstream insurers (Direct Line, Aviva, Churchill) don't yet offer a blanket dashcam discount. However, this is changing rapidly as claim data accumulates.
The Bigger Saving: Fault Decisions
This is where the real money is. In a disputed claim — which accounts for around a third of all UK motor claims — insurers default to a 50/50 fault split if there's no clear evidence. A 50/50 at-fault marking typically adds £200–£400 to annual premiums for three years.
Dashcam footage that clearly establishes the other party was at fault eliminates this entirely. Dashcam footage is now accepted as primary evidence by all major UK insurers, and drivers who submit clear footage consistently report faster resolution of disputed claims.*
"Having footage that clearly shows what happened removes all the guesswork. Insurers can close the case in days instead of months."

What Insurers Actually Need
Not all footage is useful. For a successful claim, your footage should have: clear resolution (1080p minimum), GPS speed data, an accurate timestamp, and the incident itself clearly visible. G-sensor automatic locking is essential — without it, the footage may be overwritten before you think to save it.
Our Recommendation
For insurance purposes, we recommend the Nextbase 622GW (4K + GPS) or the Nextbase 522GW for front-and-rear coverage. Both automatically lock incident footage and embed GPS data in every frame.
